Zapatista update

On the scene account of the Zapatista red alert:

la_garrucha_alerta_roja.jpg

Three days after my farewell from San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, the Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional (EZLN) issued a red alert for the region where I had just spent a month and a half. The EZLN put their autonomous communities on alert and evacuated them to live clandestinely in the protection of the Laconda jungle highlands. They called it a "precautionary defense measure" and effectively took themselves out of danger from a government intent on wiping out their resistance.

Through its spokesman, Subcomandante Marcos, the EZLN issued four communiques in a matter of four days to explain to the world their actions, their reasons and their assurances....

UNEARTHING RICHMOND'S SLAVE HISTORY

Archaeological Survey Planned for Lumpkin's Jail Site

Shockoe Bottom, the historic valley where Richmond began, soon will be home to an important archaeological project expected to uncover valuable clues about Richmond's past.
LumpkinsJail.jpg

Late this summer, The City of Richmond, in partnership with The Richmond Slave Trail Commission, The Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR), and the Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods (A.C.O.R.N), will sponsor an archaeological survey of the site that was once Lumpkin's Jail, the largest and best-known slave pen and boarding house for slave traders in antebellum Richmond. After the Civil War, Lumpkin's Jail became a school for newly freed blacks-the forerunner of the institution known today as Virginia Union University. To be undertaken on City-owned land in Shockoe Bottom, the archaeological survey is intended to determine the presence or absence of intact cultural remains associated with Lumpkin's Jail and whether further archaeological study is warranted.

July 8th Monroe Park--Richmond, VA
5376_mjs6.jpg

On July 8th as the rulers of the eight most powerful nations meet in Scotland to decide our fates, communities around the world will take to the streets to fight back against the fossil fuels industry’s devastation of our Earth and its people. No longer can we stand by as our air is polluted, our water poisoned, our mountains destroyed, and our communities terrorized by these careless corporate thugs. On this day, in conjunction with Venezuelan communities fighting coal mines in their country, the people of Appalachia and folks from all across the east coast will descend on Richmond, VA to confront one of the most ruthless coal companies in the US, Massey Energy Co, who has been systematically destroying the mountains and people of Southern Appalachia through a form of mining called mountaintop removal (MTR).
