Talk is Cheap! Truth Is Priceless!!

Kaffee: I want the truth! Jessep: You can't handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has walls. And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns… Recently, a couple of us attended “Norfolk Talkfest? featuring Fox News pundit Sean Hannity, Democrat (!???) Zell Miller and others. The responses I anticpated from followers of this extremist diatribe were not entirely what I expected.

Jessep (Jack Nicholson): You want answers?

Kaffee (Tom Cruise): I think I'm entitled to them.

Ahh, popular media – regardless of your view over this fictional  confrontation from A Few Good Men – it seems people of all stripes believe they are entitled to the answers and furthermore want the truth..

Recently, a couple of us attended “Norfolk Talkfest? featuring Fox News pundit Sean Hannity, Democrat (!???)  Zell Miller and others, ok our truth be told- we didn’t actually attend, but instead stood outside the Old Dominion Unversity auditorium with our signs and spirits high.

The responses I anticpated from followers of this extremist diatribe were not entirely what I expected. My sign simply read “TALK IS CHEAP! TRUTH IS PRICELESS!!   It was the attention we were able to garner, not from the “media talent?,  but from the audience who were attending the event that both humbled and energized me.

As with any extremist views, there were those that we felt we were there to undermine the American way of life, an example “We should be thanking President Bush for the freedom we have to protest!?  To which my response was that “It wasn’t President Bush– it was the Declaration of Independence and United States Consitution that gave us that freedom!?

In Bill Moyers recent plenary speech to the National Conference on Media Reform in St. Louis, Missouri, May 15, 2005, he compared George Orwells vision in “1984? of “newspeak? vernacular with the impact of the media today with this powerful warning:

Hear me: an unconscious people, an indoctrinated people, a people fed only partisan information and opinion that confirm their own bias, a people made morbidly obese in mind and spirit by the junk food of propaganda is less inclined to put up a fight, ask questions and be skeptical. And just as a democracy can die of too many lies, that kind of orthodoxy can kill us, too.?

Orwell’s then futuristic orthodoxy was “not thinking, not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness.?  And that the whole aim of “Newspeak? was to deliberately narrow the range of thought.

Turns out that there are still many Right Wingers, Warriors, Republicans, Zell Miller Democrats and fierce independents that are searching for the truth. Seeing my sign, many politely asked, “What is the truth?? And I had a list of truths I had learned at the ready. Facts regarding the pretenses for war, consequences of war, loss of civil liberties, erosion of basic human values and morals, corporate influence and the propagandizing of our own government on its citizenry ad nauseam!

With our on the street, person to person dialogue- my “audience? and I agreed on many common concerns which further reinforced my long held belief that people will do the right things, if given the right information. I believe the information and facts provided by a free and independent media is the antithesis our modern day “Ministry of Truth? As Mr. Moyer’s said “A free press is one where it’s okay to state the conclusion you’re led to by the evidence.?

The mainstream press and political machine have failed us in providing information and evidence. As Clay Evans concluded in his May 15th, 2005 article in the Boulder Daily Camera  “Not everyone is so afraid that they believe everything they're told; the continuing misery in Iraq — there were other approaches to the Saddam problem —
was foreseen by millions, and not just "activists." Those millions who had their patriotism questioned simply because they opposed a unnecessary war; those
believers in the humanity of all humanity — they were right, while our leaders have repeatedly borne false witness.?
