Youth Peace Summit to be held April 22

The Richmond Peace Education Center (RPEC) will sponsor its second annual Youth Peace Summit on April 22, at Fifth Baptist Church, 1415 W. Cary Street.
The Richmond Peace Education Center (RPEC) will sponsor its second annual Youth Peace Summit on April 22, at Fifth Baptist Church, 1415 W. Cary Street. The event will feature speakers and youth-planned workshops. It is free of charge, and young people from throughout the Richmond region are invited to attend. Pre-registration at the RPEC web site (www.rpec.org) is highly recommended.
Registration for the day’s events will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the first round of workshops scheduled to start at 10. Lunch will be provided. Workshops will conclude by 4 p.m., followed by a drum slam to conclude the day's events.
The summit is part of the Richmond Youth Peace Project (RYPP), an ongoing initiative of the Peace Center to encourage young people in the Richmond region to seek nonviolent alternatives when they address the disputes and injustices in their lives, and to develop the skills that will help them resolve conflicts more peacefully.
Workshop topics for the event are expected to include:
• Inter- and Intra-personal skills: Yoga for inner peace; Aikido
• Performing Arts: Spoken word; Creative writing; Drumming
• Teen issues: Domestic violence; Pregnancy prevention; Urban peace gear
• Visual Arts: Graphic design; Painting; Graffiti board
• Youth Leadership: Creative thinking; Conflict resolution skills.
An electronic registration form will be posted on the RPEC web site (www.rpec.org) in mid-March.
