Background

In addition to other threats to reproductive rights, women's access to basic birth control is under attack in Virginia. Opponents of reproductive rights are trying to blur the lines between contraception and abortion in order to restrict such access, just as they have succeeded in doing with abortion services. Among their recent legislative initiatives is a bill that would permit pharmacists to refuse to dispense basic birth control pills and emergency contraception. They have also tried to prevent student health centers at colleges and universities from providing emergency contraception (EC) to students who have experienced contraceptive failure. They have even attempted to require parental consent and a waiting period before minors could access EC, even though such delays would likely prevent EC from being effective. If they succeed in these efforts, the number of unintended pregnancies in Virginia will increase with a corresponding increase in the number of abortions performed. Women's access to basic birth control is under attack in Virginia and must be protected.

Pro-Choice Lobby Day is coordinated by the Virginia Pro-Choice Coalition.
