MARCH LEADS TO CONFRONTATION WITH MAYOR: Living Wage Rally Rocks Richmond!

Although the dark sky above threatened buckets of rain, 120 people turned out to rally for Richmond’s Coalition for a Living Wage before joining the city’s Labor Day Parade. The rally convened as part of a stepped-up campaign to pressure city council into granting hundreds of contracted city workers a living wage status.

Richmond currently pays all of its direct full-time and part-time employees a living wage of $8.70 an hour plus health benefits. The RCLW charges that the city gets away from paying hundreds more a living wage by contracting temporary labor services and labor pools to supply underpaid minimum-wage workers for the city.

Mary Lou Decossaux, a coordinator with the RLCW, said such a practice causes serious harm to the city, where one out of every four people live in poverty. “(The city council) doesn’t want people on payroll because they can save money going through labor pools,” Decossaux said during the rally. “They’re using tax dollars to keep people in poverty.”
