Postcards From Crawford

Notes from first telephone contact with Iraq Veteran against the War, Charlie Anderson, from Virginia Beach - who is on site at Camp Casey for Operation Noble Cause:

"Last evening the cemetery at Camp Casey in Crawford was vandalized as a man in a pick up truck drove through the makeshift memorial. Most residents of the camp were attending a prayer service and no one was injured.... The group on the ground are working to replace the nearly 500 crosses destroyed by the vandalism. The crosses (patterned after Arlington West) have served as a unifying focus at Camp Casey, where both counter demonstrators and supporters have given used them to memorialize the US soldiers killed in Iraq...."

Last evening the cemetery at Camp Casey in Crawford was vandalized as a man in a pick up truck drove through the makeshift memorial. Most residents of the camp were attending a prayer service and no one was injured.

Police responded quickly to the call residents of Camp Casey and found the vandal pulled over to side of road, with vehicle troubles. Police noticed splotches of white paint on the truck and found crosses embedded around the trucks underbelly. The man was taken in to custody, had spent the night in the Crawford jail on charges of criminal mischief.

The group on the ground are working to replace the nearly 500 crosses destroyed by the vandalism. The crosses (patterned after Arlington West) have served as a unifying focus at Camp Casey, where both counter demonstrators and supporters have given used them to memorialize the US soldiers killed in Iraq.

The 'population' of Camp Casey varies with 500 supporters there on Monday, after over 1,000 visiting on the weekend.

Charlie reports "the support is phenomenal". Just a few of IVAW members currently at the camp, however the "number of VFP's (Veterans for Peace) are too numerous to count".

Additionally, hundreds of rallies and vigils around the country are being planned including those by VAWN, MoveOn.Org and others. More actions are being planned, as well as changes made to the "Ops Plans" known as Operation Noble Cause.
